Warmer, drier August forecast

After summer 2009’s cool start, August will trend much warmer than 2008. The Midwest and Mid-Atlantic will be wetter than last year, while the Southeast and South Central will experience drier conditions. Tropical activity along the Gulf Coast will be lower this year, but a tropical system cannot be ruled out along the Mid-Atlantic coast.

Last August was the nation’s wettest in more than 16 years and the second coldest August in 11 years. Nationally on average, there were only two days during the month that had warmer year-on-year conditions. The week prior to Labor Day was the wettest of the past 16 years, and the fourth coldest. Tropical Storm Fay dumped copious amounts of precipitation on Florida where some places saw 1-2 feet of rain in just a few days. The cool and damp weather was dismal for summer clearance sales of outdoor categories.

The cool beginning of this summer may have left excess inventory of outdoor items on the shelves, however a warmer August will be beneficial for the clearance of those surplus items.
